Brightwater Commons - My rant

The Brigtwater Commons in Randburg one would imagine is a serene and tranquil sanctum. A grassy plot of land with an oasis like pond at its center. If one were to hypnotically visit the Brigthwater Commons one would in one’s dream state envision linen clothed twenty somethings walking hand in hand with lovers along cobbled paths and in turn dreaming about linen clothed folk dreaming about dreaming. Not at the fucking Brightwater Commons in the real world, which I had to recently visit. The Brightwater Commons my friends and foe is the repository for all that which the world has discarded and disregarded.

The Brightwater Commons is a snake pit, rows and rows of filth and shit coil up rearing their rejected heads at you. It is a labyrinth of crap; cell phone chargers, poorly crafted trinkets, unpainted bumpers in wait of stolen donor vehicles and leather items which reek of their predestined ill repute.

The Brightwater Commons is flanked on one side by a vast moat in which one might assume the loyal patrons have either evolved out of, or alternatively now ritualisticaly shit in together. It is bordered by line stores with brands few have ever encountered and perhaps might only vaguely ever remember.

It is like visiting Willy Wonka’s factory only to find the chocolate melted, the Umpa Lumpas dead and Wonka’s Willy exposed.

The Brightwater Commons is home to a skate park which when I briefly skirted its border allowed youths to experiment with all sorts of sophistication; young girls wearing pants so tightly clasped around their chubby bodies that their ass cracks hang out as place holders for the joints their young boy friends are rolling and smoking. It is also home to the Brightwater Commons express, a train ride for kids which is, I dare break this mythical beast’s real identity, a mother fucking golf kart pulling four buckets. The fun doesn’t stop there; the Brightwater Commons has indeed got a grassy bank but it is littered with jumping castles which stink of neglected children’s sweat and the foul odor of a day long jump-fest.

In a word the Brightwater Commons is “hell”. It is where, if I were to loath someone sufficiently enough, I would wish that they spent every single waking fucking hour. I  would wish upon this unlucky enemy that they had to walk up and down its parallel isles for perpetuity, for there could be no worse punishment nor a more cruel punishment than that.

Democracy - Vote BS!

It seems to me that the world is obsessed with the democratic ideal. The west loves fighting for the rights of all men and women to be equal and have there fair say in the governance of the country they happen to live in. The need to crush, by force when necessary, any society that doesn’t conform to this brand of “freedom” is taken as a moral imperative.

Well, I’ve gotta say, what a load of BS!!!

democracy will come to you 300x250 Democracy Vote BS!

Sside from the gross inconsistencies and selective championing, which more often than not take the form of crushing anyone else’s freedom to choose there own system of governance, as long as there is a financial incentive to be had the system itself makes no sense (even if it is democracy in the true sense). Take the example of Guatamala in the 1950’s who pissed the USA off by (through democratic process I might add) electing a government that sought to better the life of its people by offering to purchase unused land for development from a USA based company and instituting a system of reforms for the betterment of its citizens which resulted in a hostile US sponsored coup with the objective of cementing the companies exploitative labour practices.

Recently I was talking with an accountant, he told me that the average wage per hour of an accountant or actuarial scientist far exceeded that of a medical practitioner. When I asked him how this could make sense he said simply said, a doctor is responsible for your life, but an accountant deals with your money, and for most people their money is far more important.

So lets put democracy into financial terms – a corporation is deciding on a strategic path that may result in large financial gains or losses, the democratic approach would be to call all the staff together, raise a ballot and let the majority decide. NOT!! There is not a person I know who would give a snot about what the average janitor or simple workers opinions are when it comes to the crunch.

How about taking democracy down to the medical level, a surgeon is about to make tricky decision, think he is going to call all the nurses, orderlies and general staff around to see what they think, not likely. And if he does, you better pray you aren’t the poor stiff-to-be on the cutting block.

I say again - the system simply makes no sense, the average voter is just that, average. And the majority are probably not even average in reality (ya I know that’s inconsistent but probably true). Experts are needed to make expert decisions.

But a further truth is that the democratic process as we know it, isn’t even really democratic. Just you try running for president! First you need a fortune of money to support your campaign – that eliminates already at least 70% of our population. Next you would need to be given a fair chance to state your positions – that means equal time and opportunity to state your case (even if it is undemocratic), and finally you would need to be at least be representative of the people who did vote for you.

That means that if you vote for a party that when one of its representatives then chooses to do a floor crossing – thereby no longer representing the voters who put them there, they would be tossed out of government. Or when you vote for say the DA, thereby making them representative of your opinions and policies (were there any besides “stop Zuma”???) and they choose to form a coalition with parties that you didn’t vote for, you would be able to say, hold on, that’s not what I wanted.

Once again I say it doesn’t make any sense.

The Parlotones have made it - Much Respect

Even though they appear to faf around a lot with hair straighteners and mascara, the Parlotones have managed to achieve international success in the rock genre. Although not a fan of their music, I have a profound respect for their business savvy and as a UK DJ recently put it their “good guy” attitude to the business of making it big in an industry dominated by drug-den-divas. I may have recently penned my obnoxious eulogy for Rock ‘n’ Roll and in my opinion there’s hardly any grit, nor anything rock ‘n’ roll about the Parlotones they are a professional outfit. The Parlatones are a polished traveling act and they write music like architects build offices … to inspire wealth creation.

With tours across Europe, headline acts here in South Africa the Parlotones ARE a success why the fuck am I even bothering to endorse them then? You know who they are, they know who they are and mass media has taken notice of them. I am feeling particularly proud of them, maybe it’s because I’ve recently watched Going Nowhere Slowly a quintessential South African take on South Africa. South Africans are and for a long time to come will be considered under dogs internationally. We stand back in awe of South Africans who are moderately successful abroad. Their success is achieved without closed minded critical acclaim so inherent in the explicitly positive South African journalists. When our local achievers make it outside of South Africa they are free from racialised, politicised and commercialised agendas - they are competing at a global level warts and all. Hence the Parlotones have truly made it, free from all of the local bias and thus we must respect such success.

It is for this reason why we must appreciate what the likes of the Parlotones have achieved, even if we don’t all appreciate their music, they have appeared in Kerrang Magazine as a top rock act to look out for and could be heard in FujiFilm’s European advertisements, on stages across Europe and most impressively have graced the stage of London’s 100 Club.

This is my tip of the cap to a top class South African band and I hope you’ll join me in wishing them all the best on their European tour.

Can I get a Hell Yeah! Guitar Hero Metallica has been launched in RSA, which means you can play your favourite Metallica tracks on your XBox360 or PS 3! Apparently the Wii lags behind the competitors so for the love of god do not mutilate Metallica tracks with the Wii’s poor graphic and sound capabilities least of all let Metallica appear along side those simplistic Nintendo games.
